BRIXEN/BRESSANONE, Italy - After being passed fit on Tuesday, the day before the start of the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships here, the injury bug appeared yesterday with some devastating effect.

No fewer then three Jamaican athletes were taken to the medical area and one, 800m runner Waquar daCosta, ended up in the area hospital briefly.
A number of others were also seen running with bandages.
DaCosta, a late addition to the team, fell to the track after finishing last in his first round heat in 1:59.576 and after lying prostrate for several minutes, medics rushed to his side, putting an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose and wheeling him off to the medical area with team doctor Dr Paul Wright in tow.
The Jamaica College runner was then transferred to the hospital but returned later and told the Observer he was diagnosed with a chest infection which the doctors feared could be Bronchitis.
He said further checks would be made when he returned home.
The double CARIFTA Games gold medallist in the U-17 800m and 1500m who said he was "very disappointed not to advanced past the first round, said he developed a cough while in Cuba on the two-day training camp.
This cough did not go away and midway, the race he felt his chest tighten and then became painful.
At the least he said his season is over as Dr Wright advised him not to take any more part in the Championships.
Girls 100m semi-finalist Deandra Whitehorn was taken off the track in a wheelchair after twisting her ankle just after the second round and was in tears when she was taken away.
Up to when the meet ended yesterday, her condition was not known.
Chantal Duncan should line up in the semi-finals of
the 400m today but she was also nursing an unspecified injury yesterday.
She looked flat in her heat, just managing to advance after placing fourth in her qualifying heat and was seen being attended to by medics.
Adam Cummings and 400m qualifier Sandrae Farquharson ran with bandages to their thighs, while boys 400m runner Javere Bell is recovering from a ham
string injury.
