Missing the Point!!!!

First of all, let me personally say congratulations to our senior men’s basketball team for winning the championships! While I still hope for the day when, like our track and field athletes, we are able to field a fully homegrown team, I must nevertheless quickly add that the several New Yorkers who made up this 2009 team are all players with Jamaican background. This, indeed, is an outstanding performance by an outstanding Jamaican team!
Now, why this particular win by Jamaica (despite a surprising first game loss to Trinidad) should remind anyone of my post on the topic of whether of not Jamaica is a Caribbean “sports power” is something of a mystery to me! The physical structure of this forum has several limitations, one of which is the limited nature of its archives, otherwise I would have posted my sentence(s) acknowledging Jamaica’s victories in Caribbean basketball (BOTH men and women) about two or three years ago. Despite rarely having a reason to comment on sports here, the fact is that I follow ALL Caribbean sports on a daily basis, and not only those involving Jamaica!
A good source to begin, for those who have not been following regional sports reports, is www.caribbeannewspapers.com
I also noted, but did not bother to reply to, the several postings over a month ago on individual Jamaicans who had made teams in Europe and in the USA. I couldn’t fathom why posters had left the focal point of my initial thread on Jamaica’s performance in regional and international sports, and instead started talking about this and that player who had made this and that team! That was never an issue in my original post!
In my initial post, I also showed, by a clear listing, that our regional failures were greater than our successes. While we win a basketball championship once in a while (in fact, we are far more successful in an area like the martial arts when compared with basketball), our successes over the past several years has been poor in the following sports events: boxing, swimming, lawn tennis, badminton, volleyball, rugby, men’s soccer, body building, middle and long distance running, gymnastics, golf, and squash.
The only thing I will be forced to do if this debate persists is to copy the headline and first paragraph of every sports report (excluding, of course, netball and track and field) that appeared in Jamaica’s Gleaner and Observer newspapers from, say, January 2008 to July 2009 and post them here on the forum! This will be time consuming, but I will do so to prove the accuracy of my point!
Once again, I submit that Cuba is the sports power of the Caribbean region! As far as consistency is concerned, Jamaica’s power rests on three fronts ONLY: track (and, to some limited extent, field), netball, and women’s soccer.

What about cricket?
4 in a row for BBall aint bad. I think we are good in hockey, reasonable in TTennis, soccer (Cuba aint better), and golf not too bad. Boxing, swimming, tennis, VB, rugby, BodyB gymnastics and perhaps squash now suck.

Regarding basketball, it’s not four in a row for us at the Caribbean basketball Championships. Rather, it is four wins over an almost 30-year period!
These are the years in which Jamaica emerged as winners of the Caribbean basketball Champions (I think it used to be called the CARICOM Basketball Championships): 1981, 1996, 2006, and 2009.
