WIMBLEDON 2009: Bitter champ Serena gets it off her chest

By Mark Ryan Last updated at 7:27 PM on 04th July 2009

Serena Williams soured her Wimbledon triumph by launching a withering attack on world No1 Dinara Safina and the WTA ranking system last night.

Having beaten her sister Venus 7-6, 6-2 in the singles final, Williams entered her press conference wearing a white T-shirt with a slogan across her cleavage in bold pink letters which read: 'Are you looking at my titles?'

She explained: 'I thought last night that if I win I'll wear this because I'll have 11 (Grand Slam) titles and wouldn't know if you guys were looking at my titles or my Gatorade (drinks) bottle.'

Cheeky: Serena Williams faces the press

shocking. But it is what it is. I'd definitely rather be No2 and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be No1 and not have any.'

Then, with a devastating sarcasm that hardly seemed appropriate to a Wimbledon champion who had just come off court, she added: 'I see myself as No2. That's where I am. Dinara did a great job to get to No1. She won Rome and Madrid.'

Those are lesser-rated tournaments and the remark brought howls of laughter from the assembled press. But Safina, who was swept aside by Venus Williams at Wimbledon's semi-final stage this year, will be furious.

Talking with more grace about the way she recovered from a match-point against Elena Dementieva in her own semi-final to claim the Wimbledon crowd for a third time, Serena said: 'The match is never over until you shake your opponent's hand - and it is a good lesson in life.'

Meanwhile, Venus Williams refused to blame her nagging knee injury for her defeat. She said: 'I have no complaints, everyone has something they are dealing with.' She admitted that losing to her sister did not soften the blow of failing to take her sixth Wimbledon title. She said: 'There is no "easy" to losing, especially when you are so close to the crown.'

Was on BBC Sports...I was impresses with her actually..in more ways than one....
We need people like Serena to speak out to these maufactured rankings when it suits them....all this gracious-ness nonsense...I heard commentators saying how the sisters were more "matured" now and starting to "play tennis" and not just use brute force.
Wish they could have tied for first....what happens if both players retire hurt - at the same time?
