With the best American track and field athletes in one place last weekend for the national championships, there was a good shot that some impressive performances would emerge from the meet. While Allyson Felix and Dwight Phillips put in solid efforts, Tyson Gay impressed the crowd in Eugene, Ore. and positioned himself again as a rival to Jamaica's Usain Bolt by clocking 9.75 seconds in the 100 meters.

Gay's time was the seventh-fastest ever in the distance (he did have a slight tailwind) and the best in the world this year. For his effort, Gay, the 2007 world champion in the 100 and 200 meters, wins this week USA TODAY Olympic Athlete of the Week award. Gay now has the best times in the world this year in both distances.
Felix, who is going for her third world title in the 200, ran the full meet and earned her way onto the world team despite having an automatic spot due to her 2007 championship. She ran the 200 in 22.02 seconds (wind-aided) to post the fastest time in the world this season.
Phillips, who was the 2004 gold medalist in Athens but failed to make the Beijing team last year, jumped 28 feet, 1 1/2 inches for the national championship, giving him four of the top six jumps in the world this year. He also won the men's Visa Championship series, netting a $25,000 bonus.
