Lee sizzles at Jamaican high school championships
Kingston, Jamaica - World Junior and Youth champion Dexter Lee won his first senior (Class One or Under-20) boys' title at Jamaica's High Schools Track & Field Championships, Boys' and Girls Champs, on Friday (3).
Herbert Morrison's Lee, who won the World Junior 100m crown last year in Poland and the Youth title in Czech Republic in 2007, took Friday's event in a personal best 10.31. St Jago's Nickel Ashmeade, who won the 200m silver at last summer's World Juniors, was second in 10.37.
On the female side, Carrie Russell, the 2006 Beijing's World Junior bronze medallist, took top honours in 11.37 ahead of Jura Levy of Vere (11.42 PB) and Gayon Evans of Edwin Allen (11.58 PB).
In the boys' Class Two (Under-16), Bridgeport High's 15-year-old Jazeel Murphy, who is too young for World Youths this year, raced to victory in 10.44. Julian Forte of Wolmer's was second in 10.75.
The girls' equivalent went to Vere Technical's Deandre Whitehorn, who crossed the line in 11.54, ahead of Herbert Morrison Technical's Shavine Hodges (11.84). Kaneil Harrison of Munro College (11.10) and Osheen Erskine of Holmwood (11.98) took the boys' and girls' Class Three (Under-15) events.
In Class Four (Under-13), Holmwood's Dianna Johnson had a Championship record run of 11.90 for victory.
Edwin Allen's sister pair of Nikita and Ristananna Tracey finished one-two in the 400m hurdles open, running personal best times of 57.41 and 58.49 respectively.
In the boys' event, Kingston College (KC) also got one-two with Keiron Stewart (51.14), the bronze medallist in the 110m hurdles in Poland, and Andre Peart (51.67).
Bellefield High's Kemoy Campbell, in the boys' Class One (Under-19) 1500m, became the first Jamaican schoolboy to run under three minutes, 50 seconds at the annual championships, when he clocked 3:48.43 to win the Class One 1500m. Campbell lowered the 3:51.97 set by Vere Technical's Dudley Dawkins in 1992.
Natoya Goule of Manchester High took the girls' equivalent in 4:31.43.
Come Saturday (April 4), in front of a sold out stadium of over 30,000 spectators, the rivalry among the top boys' teams, Kingston College (KC) and Calabar will resume for Championships honours while Holmwood girls are well on their to a seventh consecutive title.
