  • Tragedy for a sports family

I know Lindly and Carmen very well, was at a party with them a few weeks ago and as ALWAYS they were so graceful and pleasant; only knew Kirk fleetingly and met him when he used to come down to volunteer as a runner at the Western Relays at Cornwall College.

May God grant them peace and strength in this very trying time.

    George Headley's grandson found hanging

    Friday, March 27, 2009
THE grandson of legendary former West Indies cricketer George Headley was found hanging outside his parents' house early yesterday. Police suspect that he committed suicide.

The body of Kirk Headley, 31, was found at his parents' Paddington Terrace home, shortly after he had dropped them at the Norman Manley International Airport to catch an early morning flight to Miami, enroute to Mexico.

Parents Lindy Headley, a Jamaican Olympian and Carmen, were already on their way back to Jamaica, a family friend told the Observer last night. It was not certain how far in the journey they had reached before hearing of the tragedy.

"A neighbor saw his body extended from a rope and called the police. Soon after, a young lady who was due to visit him, arrived on the scene and saw him hanging from a rope. It was shocking," a family friend said last night.

The younger Headley at times suffered from mental problems, another source close to the family said.

The Observer's visit to the house yesterday yielded little information, as the handful of people gathered declined to talk.

Workers at premises close by, and along Paddington Terrace though said that young Headley was a sociable person who got along well with most people.

"Is a man who always walk and hail we up, but sometime him behave like him have a mental problem," one worker said.

"He always walk past here, usually lean him head and sometimes him jogging, but him never give the impression that him woulda hang himself," the man said.

Kirk Headley, a bipolar personality, is a former model in South Africa where he once resided.

His grandfather George, who was born in Panama but came to Jamaica as a lad, was the first great West Indian cricketer.

He scored 10 Test centuries from 22 matches at an average of 60.83 and had the distinction of being the first West Indian double immortal, a title worn by a batsman who scores a hundred in each innings of a Test match.
Headley was first immortalised during the 1929-1930 series against England when he scored 114 run out and 112 in the third Test against England at Bourda Oval in Georgetown, Guyana. The match marked the first ever Test victory by the West Indies in six matches since it began playing cricket in 1928.

Headley repeated the feat in 1939 at Lord's, England when he scored 106 and 107 in the first Test, which England won.

One of Headley's sons, Ronald played two Tests for the West Indies in 1973.

Another of George Headley's grandsons, Dean, son of Ron, represented England in international cricket.

Kirk's father, Lindy was a member of Jamaica's sprint relay team to the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The team included Pablo McNeil, a former coach of Usain Bolt, Patrick Robinson and Dennis Johnson, a former world 100 yards record holder.

The police's information arm, the Constabulary Communication Network in a news release yesterday said that investigations revealed that Kirk Headley was suffering from depression for which he was receiving treatment.

Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.

    Painful!
    Rest in Peace, son!
