  • The West Indies are the best!!!

    5.50pm
England are celebrating now. And it's official - England have won. West Indies are distraught, perplexed and embarrassed all because of one tiny little number; and all because the light was a little bit murky. Dyson's still holding the piece of paper with the Duckworth-Lewis stats on, as though incapable of realising what has happened. It was he, though, who beckoned the two batsmen to come in when they were offered the lights. And it is he who will shortly have to explain exactly why. What a sad end to a match which was bubbling into a real beauty.

Dyson's heading over to Javagal Srinath, the match referee, to have a look at the calculations. And they're heading off to have a look. The match is 90% finished and yet here we are, waiting, just because they were a little bit worried about murky conditions. On a ground with a stack load of floodlights. What a ridiculous situation this is. Collingwood's put a torch on his head like a miner's lamp.

The players are out on the balcony and no one knows what's going on. Except England think they've won. This could be one of the most embarrassing cock-ups in recent times by Dyson, who is still trawling over the Duckworth-Lewis calculations. Unfortunately, he's based his calculations on six-wickets down rather than seven. Another incalculable farce for cricket to contend with. And we're still waiting (5.48pm). - cricinfo.com

We so dyam good we cyan give England a game!?!

In fact though when D/L comes into play the par score should be related to both teams by an independent (3rd umpire/match referee?) party.

"I'm tempted to say the defeat serves the West Indies right for being so negative. A farcical situation which brings the game into disrepute. With less than four overs to go, and with the game in the balance, then the umpires should have told both captains that the game would be played to a finish. In hindsight, the game should have been reduced by six overs when we went off for rain earlier."

2150: Well, there you have it, cricket at its very worst. England beat West Indies by one run under the Duckworth-Lewis method. England have got a bit of a cheek celebrating like that to be honest, everybody in that stadium has been cheated. 2145: This is remarkable. The replays show that coach John Dyson called the batsmen in, but replays also show him being handed a piece of paper a few minutes later and realising he's made a horrible rick. Skipper Gayle, meanwhile, looked like he was sat in front of an episode of Songs of Praise throughout the whole process. The England players not celebrating yet, although Dyson is doing his nut on the balcony. Whoops-a-daisy, Martin Hayesy...

        Dyson is an idiot.

Fire the fool or at least enroll him in remedial maths.

On another note, and this is not sour grapes, but the two on-field umpires deserve to have their tyres slashed for stupidity...the light should have been offered long time...but maybe they fall into the "all of the above" category per Mo's multiple choice above with respect to Dyson.

mi have a little sympathy for dyson. better him mek dis blunder now than in a crucial deciding match.

west indies will win the series even after spotting england 1 as it were.

                serious blunder still and though

2nd best SA did it in a crucial WC match and were elinmated because of that miscalculation.

Shouldn't the calculation be done and communicated to ALL (including spectators) by an independent body? In fact think the scoreboard does have a slot for par score; i.e. the score to beat to win. The thing is after every ball it would be recalculated but isn't that what we have computers for?

The reality that teams make this kind of calculation error makes a mockery of the game? or does it?

Should be a simple use of technology for all to view. However cricket has shown that it is not sure how to use technology.
