Rising star Lawson to take up scholarship at Temple College
    BY PAUL BURROWES
    Saturday, December 27, 2008

Nineteen-year-old Christopher Lawson, a member of Jamaica's Davis Cup team, has been offered a scholarship at Temple College in Texas, United States.
A beneficiary of Gore's Scholarship Fund, Lawson will pay only for his "meals" at Temple, a junior college with multiple campuses in central Texas. Born in St Simon in Lucea, Hanover, he attended St Simon Primary, Ocho Rios High, The Academy, and American Heritage School in Delray Beach, Florida.
Lawson sharpened his skills at the International Tennis Academy for two years, travelling to the Caribbean regularly for tournaments. "My tennis has improved a lot. I am now on the senior Davis Cup team and when I was at the International Tennis Academy (ITA) I got the chance to practise with Venus Williams for two hours," he said.
"I have come a long way with tennis. It helped get me into a school, so I will keep on playing the sport. I am hard-working, always give 100 per cent on and off the court and am friendly with everyone," he added.
Introduced to tennis when his dad took him to Ocho Rios many years ago, Lawson said at first he "didn't like the sport, but (dad) told me to give it a try. I usually play cricket so that helped me a lot with my hand and eye co-ordination. It took me two months to play my first tournament and I just moved on from there," he stated.
To his younger colleagues who want to play tennis professionally, Lawson advised: "It is going to be a long road, lots of practice, eat right, discipline yourself, and have desire and commitment to play."
