I sat through the cold, wind, and rain through two of the three final matches of the Wisconsin boys' high school state championships. I watched the Division 2 and Division 1 matches.
In Division 3, for small schools, Columbus beat McDonnell Central/Regis 3-2.
In Division 1 for large schools, Milwaukee Marquette, ranked eight nationally in the NSCAA/Adidas poll, had no problem dismissing Muskego by a 5-0 margin.
But the Division 2 championship, a rematch between Green Bay Notre Dame and Waukesha Catholic Memorial, was a cracker. Notre Dame won
3-2 after a wild first half which almost featured scoring literally from beginning to end. The first half ended 2-2.
In the third minute, Notre Dame scored on a rebound following a direct free kick. Notre Dame scored again in the 21st minute on a corner kick. Catholic Memorial scored one minute later on a penalty kick.
Memorial scored with two seconds remaining in the half. The Memorial player just took a wild shot from 40 yards out, and caught Notre Dame's keeper off the line. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper and into the net.
In Friday's semifinal, Notre Dame got a break when a Pewaukee goal at halftime was not given because the ball crossed the goal line a second too late.
Notre Dame scored in the 56th minute on a beautiful crossing play. Catholic Memorial put on a furious siege the rest of the match, but Notre Dame survived.
