  • Sutherland, Gonzales to join Mills' camp

Two of Jamaica's most successful junior athletes, Jermaine Gonzales and Sonita Sutherland, are set to join Usain Bolt at Racers Track Club for the coming season.

Gonzales and Sutherland, both medallists at World Junior Championships, have decided to change their coaches, Fitz Coleman and Maurice Wilson, respectively, to join Glen Mills, who created history with Bolt at the Beijing Olympics last month.

    Bolt won three gold medals, 100m (9.69), 200m (19.30) and 4x100m (37.10) in world-record times.

Mills confirmed to STAR Sports that the former junior stars have joined his group.

"Yes that is true ... we have had discussions and agreed that they will join the programme," Mills, who returned to the island yesterday with Bolt, said.

"We are going to look at what we can do for them in the coming season," said Mills of the two athletes, who have suffered injuries in recent years.

    Represented Jamaica

Both athletes have represented Jamaica at the senior level. Gonzales, who was part of Jamaica's team at the Athens Olympics, won bronze at the Commonwealth Games while Sutherland, a third-year student at G.C. Foster College, is a Central American and Caribbean (CAC) relay gold medallist.

Gonzales won bronze at the 2002 World Junior Championships in Kingston while Sutherland enjoyed back-to-back success with silver medals in 2004 and 2006 at the same level.

Both have also won several Carifta Games and Junior CAC gold medals.
