  • Even as Bolt Sets Records, Puma Keeps Its Own Clock

By NICHOLAS CASEY in Los Angeles and MEI FONG and STEPHANIE KANG in Beijing
    August 23, 2008; Page A12

Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt's historic Olympic victories have provided his shoe sponsor, Puma AG, with an unexpected burst of publicity on the global stage. And yet the German footwear company's immediate reaction -- as laid back as a sunny Jamaican morning -- is almost the opposite of Mr. Bolt's now-famous celebratory antics.

Agence France-Presse/Newscom Gold medals, gold shoes: Jamaica's Usain Bolt celebrates his rising star. Puma, not as much.

While sponsors like Visa Inc. rushed out congratulatory ads touting Michael Phelps's triumphs -- and Nike Inc. took out full-page ads in China consoling star hurdler Liu Xiang when he came up injured -- Puma has laid low in the wake of Mr. Bolt's world-record performances in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. That means no big print ads, no instant TV commercials, no giant murals unveiled in Beijing, Los Angeles or even Kingston, Jamaica.

Joker marketing department, promote yuh gear while Bolt is on top. No wonder dem is far behind Nike, Reebok & Adidas in sales.

        Bold gamble by Puma...
...but why should I worry about that if Bolt and his handlers reap mega-bucks!

Yet...just one company with a high selling product where the fees are tied to units sold would be worth multi-millions of dollars in dat dere US market for the athlete?

The Marketing Managers of the none US 'athlete-products' need to re-think the type of selling they do of these 'athlete-products' in the US market-place. A product such as shoeware product could cause sales figures to make country of origin and or country which the athlete represented of less that over-riding importance in the US market?

A Bolt 'athletic shoe' could, perhaps, be for sometime the top 'athletic shoe' seller in the US market?!

he would have to do oprah, letterman, leno. for a non american who is not an actor or a singer .....

as far as consumerism goes america is a good market, but if the rest of the world is a better market that is where they will go.....

is serena still contracted to puma? if she is that could be bolt's segue into the american market ....me thinks not though seeing that venus has her own line. puma did not do wonders for serena in america, imagine how much harder it will be for bolt.

i think he has a slim chance though, he has enough personality to do it ..... AND the twang!

"When you do congratulations ads, are you doing it for Wall Street or for the consumer?" asks Puma's Chief Marketing Officer Antonio Bertone. Puma, which is 68%-owned by French retailer PPR SA, argues that its target customer -- hip, young, urban and perceiving the brand as alternative fashion as much as high-performance athletic wear -- is resistant to the monolithic marketing campaigns typical of the industry.
I hear what they are saying so why not develop non-typical marketing campaigns for their superstar?

Gamma going on Oprah is not about America, it is worldwide. Sad to say but these programs are watched worldwide, where there is cable and it is a launching pad.

Only other media have such coverage outside America that Bolt can get on is the BBC. Would love to see him make a guess appearance or two in a sitcom or some other show. The Bobsled movie actors got a a little soap appearance. Shawn Crawford got one after last olympics etc. It can be done, none of them have Bolt's personality.

bolt doesn't need oprah to take him to the world, she would take him to america.
