BEIJING - The world saw Jamaican sprint dominance coupled with American failures in signature events during the 10-day track and field competition at the National Stadium.

New USA Track & Field CEO Doug Logan saw a marketing opportunity.

How about a US-Jamaica dual meet?

"It'd bring some attention to the sport and actually be fun," said Olympic 400-meter champion LaShawn Merritt. "I'd probably participate if everything was right. The Jamaicans have been running well. The US has been running well. They've had their events in these Games. We've had our events. It would be interesting."

Imagine a healthy Tyson Gay challenging Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell. Consider the drawing power of races between Allyson Felix and Veronica Campbell-Brown in the 100 and 200. And don't forget showdowns between the men's and women's 4 x 100-meter relays. That would be something the nightly stadium crowds of 91,000 never saw because of dropped batons by the US entries.

"How about that?" said Logan. "Particularly a meet that maybe is focused just on middle distances and below. And make it a 1 1/2-to-two-hour event. And maybe a home-and-home series is something that would be very, very attractive in the coming months. I'm sure you're going to see us take a look at that."

true dat... its just jamaica did exceptionally well... comparing the other olympics the americans were on par... had it not been for jamaica's dominance in the sprints, the usa would be way out front in t&f medal haul...

one ting mi have issue with... our federation head should not be saying stuff like this, even tongue in cheek...

Imagine if the carry Bolt up where they had US trials, he woulda run 10.4.

That Track has always produced some great times.

                  disagree.

With the history of US dominance in sprinting... they have been an abject failure at these games. They were absolutely shut out (of winning) in ALL short sprint events.. that's virtually unprecedented and a huge blow to that country.

Everything is relative... relative to their historic success.. this performance is a US failure... and they know it.

This is a great marketing opportunity that would certainly draw the crowds. This could be on par with with the Ashes Series between England and Australia. Can you imagine alternating such a meet between Jamaica and the US. We can go even a little bit further and take it down to the high school level. Yes I know there is the Penn Relays, but just imagine a meet with other track & field event with just Jamaica vs the USA. Of course a number of parameters would have to be put in place to level the playing field.

I bet it would not draw any crowds in the USA! They better have that meet in Europe or Jamaica!

Don't underestimate the US marketing media.

No, I just have a good feel for the American public, their likes and dislikes. I also understand the Jamaican diaspora and know that they are as fickle as they come.
