Congratulations are in order for Usain Bolt for winning gold and creating a new world record last Saturday. (I am writing on Monday, August 18, my deadline.) For the better part of this year, Jamaica has had the two fastest men in the world. I believe that as a nation we could have handled it better. Instead of a sense of gratitude for having achieved this, the media asked their parents who they thought would have won, and so on. In this respect, we have been divisive. We live at a time when most, if not all of our adult Jamaicans have had some sort of secondary education. Most know sufficient geography to realise the comparatively small size of Jamaica on the world map - indeed 144 miles long as the crow flies. There are ranches in Texas - one of the 50 American states - that are bigger than Jamaica. There are the massive continents: Africa is 5000 miles from north to south and 4500 miles from east to west.
