Boxer disqualified for biting Olympic opponent

And believe it or not ... Evander Holyfield was there to see it
Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:37 AM ET
BEIJING (AP) - A light heavyweight boxer from Tajikistan was disqualified for biting his opponent on the shoulder during their Olympic quarterfinal bout Tuesday night.

Watch highlights from boxing's day 10 quarterfinals.

Dzhakhon Kurbanov's bout with Kazakhstan's Yerkebulan Shynaliyev was stopped with 17 seconds left in the third round when Kurbanov apparently bit Shynaliyev during a clinch.
Shynaliyev, who angrily showed the blood on his shoulder to the referee, led 12-6 at the time. Kurbanov had been warned multiple times for shoving and holding his opponent.
Kurbanov is a 22-year-old fighter who got off to an auspicious start in Beijing last week, beating world champion Abbos Atoev in his first bout. He won the 2005 Asian championships as a middleweight, and was competing in his first Olympics.
Oddly enough, the evening card at Workers' Gymnasium was watched by Evander Holyfield, who was infamously bitten on the ear by Mike Tyson on June 28, 1997

Argentina routs Brazil 3-0, will face Nigeria for gold

Aguero scores two and draws penalty as Riquelme adds third
Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:55 AM ET

BEIJING (AP) - Sergio Aguero scored goals six minutes apart in the second half and later set up another to lead Argentina to a 3-0 win over rival Brazil and its second straight Olympic final.
Aguero opened the scoring for the defending champions by chesting in a left-side cross in the 52nd minute, then scored again from two meters (yards) on a cross from the right in the 58th. Aguero also set up a 76th-minute penalty kick that was converted by Juan Roman Riquelme.
It was the first victory for Argentina against Brazil in three years. It hadn't beaten Brazil since a 3-1 victory in a World Cup qualifier in June 2005.
"It's not a score you see every day when Brazil and Argentina play," Argentina coach Sergio Batista said. "Argentina had a great match, with intelligence and personality."
Argentina, trying to become the first nation to win consecutive titles in 40 years, will now face Nigeria in a rematch of the 1996 final in Atlanta, when the Africans won 3-2 for their first and only title.
Brazil will have to wait at least another four years to try to win its first Olympic gold medal. It is the only significant title the five-time world champions have never won.
The match in front of a crowd of nearly 53,000 at Workers' Stadium marked the encounter of the tournament's top stars, former FC Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Nigeria romped into the Olympic soccer final with a 4-1 victory over Belgium, getting two long-range goals from Emmanuel Ekpo and Chibuzor Okonkwo.

Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi of Nigeria celebrates after scoring a goal against Belgium during the team's Olympic soccer semifinal in Shanghai on Aug. 19, 2008. Nigeria won 4-2, advancing to the gold medal match.

Nicknamed 'Dream Team IV,' the Nigerians took control Tuesday with goals by Olubayo Adefemi (17th minute) and Ogbuke Obasi (59th, 72nd) before
Chibuzor Okonkwo added a fourth in the 76th.
Belgium replied two minutes from the end with a 25-yard free kick from substitute Laurent Ciman.
Nigeria, which in 1996 became the first African nation to win an Olympic gold medal in soccer, advanced to play in Saturday's gold-medal match at the 'Bird's Nest' National Stadium in Beijing. They will face the winner of today's other semifinal, the much-anticipated showdown between Lionel Messi's Argentina side and Brazil, which features his former Barcelona teammate Ronaldinho, a former FIFA Player of the Year.
"It's just wonderful," coach Samson Siasia said. "It's great. I want to applaud the players for their performance."
But he said he was about to take off Ogbuke Obasi when he scored his 30-yard shot.
"He had worked very hard so I wanted to change him to give him some rest before the final," Siasia said. "But before I could change him he scored a fantastic goal. I'm glad he did."
The two-goal attacking midfielder deflected the praise.
"I'm glad at the end I got two goals, but it's all about teamwork," Ogbuke Obasi said. "I cannot take the credit at all."
Belgium had only three outfield players to send on as substitutes after Thomas Vermaelen was suspended for the game and Vincent Kompany was called back to play for German club Hamburg.
Although Belgium still has a chance of winning the bronze medal, its defeat means that no European team has won this title since Spain in 1992.
The game was packed with goal chances at either end with Nigeria's fast-running forwards repeatedly opening up the Belgian defense. But Belgium hit the bar and had chances to score at least twice more.
Belgium goalkeeper Logan Bailly pushed an angled shot from Ogbuke Obasi around the post before Nigeria beat him in the 17th minute.
