Powell in super shape for 100m: coach
August 4, 2008
ASAFA POWELL'S coach Stephen Francis says it will take a superhuman effort for anyone to beat the 100-metre sprinter at the Beijing Olympics.
The major hiccup for the coach is a dispute over a pre-Olympic training camp with Jamaican officials insisting the sprinters join the team camp instead of heading to their own pre-arranged one. The dispute came a day before it was announced that fellow-Jamaican Usain Bolt, who took Powell's world record earlier this year, would run the 100m and 200m in Beijing.
Francis said yesterday that Bolt's world record performance in May had galvanised Powell.
"Since May [Asafa] has been almost reformed. It has done wonders for his performance," he said.
Powell recently beat Bolt in Stockholm and then ran 9.82 seconds to win in Monaco last week.
"He's in great, great shape and it's going to take a superhuman effort to beat him," Francis said.
