Asafa backs out hurt, but J'can girls grab three wins at Golden League CMC

      Saturday, July 12, 2008

ROME, Italy (CMC) - Jamaican women uncorked three victories but the country's big name sprinter Asafa Powell suffered an injury to spoil Jamaica's celebration at the IAAF Rome Golden League track and field meeting yesterday.

Powell, aiming to be at his best this summer for the elusive global championship win, suffered a groin injury in the heats and withdrew from the final. But Kerron Stewart, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Melaine Walker registered Jamaican wins on the third stop in the rich Golden League series where Russian Yelene Isinbaeva set a new women's pole vault record of 5.03 metres.

Powell, who recently returned to competition following a shoulder injury, suffered a groin injury during his preliminary heat. He had a bullet start and surged into a big lead on the field, but suddenly shut down in the second half of the race and finished fifth in 10.19 seconds.

The time qualified him for the final as the fastest loser, but he pulled out of the main race that Portugal's Francis Obikwelu won in 10.04 seconds, over the Caribbean pair of Bahamian Derrick Atkins (10.04) and Jamaican Nesta Carter (10.05).Jamaican Michael Frater (10.12) and the Kittitian Kim Collins (10.14) got fifth and sixth, respectively.

Stewart, the new Jamaica national 100-metre champion, ran a solid race to take the women's 200 in 22.34 seconds, chased by Jamaica-born American Sanya Richards (22.49) and the French runner Muriel Hurtis-Houairi (22.50).Jamaican Sherone Simpson (22.88) placed sixth.

Foster-Hylton led a Jamaica one-two finish in the women's 100-metre hurdles. She won in 12.60 seconds with Delloreen Ennis-London (12.62) a close second. Candice Davis, of the USA, was third 12.72.

In the women's 400 hurdles, Walker continued to advertise good form ahead of the Beijing Olympics, landing the event in 54.36 seconds.
Poland's Anna Jesien (54.71) was second and Jamaican Shevon Stoddart fourth in 54.98 seconds.

Jamaican Ricardo Chambers (44.96) scored a good win in race two of the men's 400 metres, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago's Ato Stephens (45.62) and Jamaican Sanjay Ayre (45.77) in a Caribbean sweep of the top spots.
Race one went to the Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner (44.36) as he avenged his US Olympic Trials loss to LaShawn Merritt (44.37).
Bahamian Chris Brown was third in 44.73 seconds.

There were three other top three results for Caricom athletes.
Jamaicans Novlene Williams (50.79) and Shericka Williams (50.83) were second and third respectively in the women's 400 behind American Allyson Felix (50.25) and Jamaica's Athens Olympics silver medallist Danny McFarlane (48.57) was third in the men's 400m hurdles behind Americans Kerron Clement (48.23) and Bershawn Jackson (48.34).

Never had to hear it from Bolt. Francis does this sort of thing from time to time. Not sure I like the reason why he does it.

Look for Asafa to have an injury-free Olympics.
