  • On Sunday I had the pleasure of hearing Joel Garner

(what a bredda big! especially next to pint size me) speak at closing ceremony for the cricket season at the club where I coach. I also delivered the vote of thanks, and then knocked back a few with the big guy afterwards..but I digress. Islandman's comment on the other forum quoting Garvey " if you want to hide anything from a black man, put it in a book", reminded me of Garner's advice to the kids; one of them was that they should read. It's evident that many youths today don't even read the headlines, much less open a book.

I know, right now I'm fighting with my 14 yr old son to read; anything, a magazine, articles on the net, the cover on the roll of toilet paper, whatever, but it's like pulling teeth.

The other piece of advice Garner gave (among many) was that youths need to learn how to express themselves. He remarked that many WI cricketers cannot string one coherent sentence together. If patois is introduced, will we then see interviewees from yard with a translator?

Is Patois going to be the silver bullet we looking for?..I have my doubts.
