KINGSTON; Jamaica - News have surfaced that Asafa Powell has promised to teach Usain Bolt a lesson in tonight’s big 100m showdown at the Jamaica Olympic Trials.
According a SportingEagle source, Powell, the former men’s 100m world record holder, told a friend he is targeting Bolt. “I am going to teach Bolt a lesson,” the source quoted Powell as saying.
However, Powell was not reachable to confirm or deny the statement. Bolt, on May 31 at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York, ran 9.72 to break Powell’s previous mark of 9.74 seconds.
Meanwhile, Powell signal his return to form when he won his heat at the trials in 9.90, while Kerron Stewart posted 10.99 to be the fastest qualifiers in the first round of the 100m dashes.
Exploding from the blocks, Powell left his competitors for dead with a strong first 60m before easing down to close the line.
World record holder Usain Bolt also won his heat in an effortless 10.19.
“The goal was to come out and work on a couple of things and that’s what I did,” Bolt said after his heat.
On the women’s side, Stewart broke 11-seconds again this season after she won her heat of the women’s 100m dash. Stewart got off to modest, but picked up well after the first 50m to win the third and final heat in 10.99 seconds.
Other heat winners on the night were Veronica Campbell-Brown (11.28) and Samantha Henry (11.16), who upset a strong field in her heat.
Earlier in the night Chelsea Hammond successfully defended her Long Jump title when she leaped 6.61m to beat Jovanee Jarrett, whose best effort on the night was 6.57m.
Isa Phillips opened with a fast 48.78, a big personal best for him to win his heat of the men’s 400m Hurdles. Kenia Sinclair also looked good when winning her heat easily in 2:02.87.
