The International Olympic Committee announced today in Athens that Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo, and Rio De Janiero had been named finalists to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Chicago backers had expected to be named as a finalist. But today's designation means the long, hard work of winning over IOC officials to select Chicago has only begun.
Three cities were eliminated: Doha, Qatar; Prague, Czech Repucblic
and Baku Azerbaijan.
The decision on Wednesday was made by the IOC's executive board. The IOC is expected to select a winner on October 2, 2009.
