Jamaican sprint queen Veronica Campbell-Brown and the world's fastest man, Asafa Powell, walked away with top honours at the RJR Sports Foundation's Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards for 2007 held at the Jamaica Pegasus last night.
Powell who broke his own world record of 9.77 with a blistering world best of 9.74 last year, despite a disappointing individual performance in the 2007 World Championships, edged out decathlon silver medallist Maurice Smith, who came in second place.
West Indies captain Chris Gayle, fast bowler Darren Powell, and athletes Usain Bolt, Danny McFarlane and Dorian Scott were the other nominees in that category.
On the heels of a spectacular 2007 season littered with memorable performances, it was no surprise that Campbell-Brown, the class act of the women's field, took the award ahead of sprint hurdler Deloreen Ennis-London, who received the runner up award.
Commendable feats
In a category, which included several commendable feats from track and field's Novlene Williams, Delloreen Ennis-London, Sherri- Ann Brooks and Nickiesha Wilson, female footballer Tashana Vincent as well as Caribbean squash champion Karen Anderson, Campbell-Brown's stunning dash to gold in the women's 100m final at the 11th IAAF World Championships in Osaka Japan, a silver medal run in the women's 200m and a determined dash to see Jamaica to silver in the women's 4x100m made her the pick of the lot.
The award was the third in a row for Powell, while Campbell-Brown was collecting her second award, having won the category in 2004. Other category awards went to the women's 4x400m team, the men's Pam Am Games football team which finished with a silver medal at last year's games. Keammar Daley who was joint leading goal scorer at the games received the male category award for football. Ricardo Smith received the award for boxing, Romelda Aiken for netball, while Caribbean squash champion and nominee Karen Anderson received the award for that sport.
West Indies captain Chris Gayle received the category award for cricket, while the Chairman's Award went to ICC CWC 2007 managing director and CEO, Chris Dehring.
