Bucknor editorial a breath of fresh air
Tuesday, January 15, 2008
Dear Editor,
Thank you for your very balanced, well-written and patriotic editorial published in the Sunday Observer of January 13, "Umpiring, technology and Steve Bucknor". Your article was like a breath of fresh air helping lovers of Jamaica and admirers of umpire Bucknor to breathe more easily amidst the recent cricket controversy, especially after an earlier Gleaner editorial on the issue that seemed rather harsh.
As a fellow Cornwallian, I regretted that Mr Bucknor was thusly treated by the Gleaner's January 10 editorial and I write to support "Missa Steve", as we Cornwall College old boys love to call our beloved Sta B, himself a CC old boy and a former coach of our champion daCosta Cup teams. Stephen Anthony Bucknor is a person of honesty and humility who focuses on nation building and excellence in sports.
Mr Bucknor was my coach in both cricket and football at the Social Development Commission (SDC) in Montego Bay when I attended CC. Our friendship continued after I went back to teach at CC and Steve returned there as D' Cup coach. We spoke to each other last in Montego Bay several months ago. It was the same Steve, all humility and all smiles. Those who know him well would endorse the verdict of the Sunday Observer's editorial concerning Bucknor's apparent umpiring error which might have helped to fuel the frenzy of the Indian cricket team following their recent loss against Australia.
It is said to err is human, to forgive divine. Therefore, this controversy in no way lowers my regards for Steve Bucknor as a Jamaican and West Indian icon, a world-class umpire and referee, and my personal sports hero. We Cornwallians adore you, Sta B. God bless, Steve Bucknor.
