    Let's hail our athletes

    THE EDITOR, Sir:
Maurice Smith is an extraordinary Jamaican. He has successfully ventured into areas where no other Jamaican has ever been. The decathlon is an area in field athletics where the going is tough on any given occasion. This young man has been to the pinnacle of the sport with resounding success.

This area of track and field presents a formidable challenge. The task of doing well in a number of disciplines successfully takes a man with a big heart. Maurice has displayed the heart of a tiger to be on par with the rest of the world who do well in the area. Not much is said of this young man who fought valiantly to put us on the map at the world level via a World Championship silver medal in this event.

It was almost at the last event that he faltered in the hunt for a gold medal. The world looks at us and wonder where this powerful country is, because it is hardly noticeable on the map.

We seemed to have won too many medals in this last World Championships, hence, we do not take the time out to recognise all of our athletes for their sterling contributions. We should be exceedingly proud of their contributions and make the necessary sacrifice to see that they are happy.

The Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association should have done more for the athletes for their contribution to Jamaica. They did a remarkable job in showcasing their talents so the world can recognise us by this unprecedented medal haul.

We all love Maurice and the rest of the team for distinguishing themselves on the world stage.

Not really. Claston Bernard won the decathlon at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He finished 9th at subsequent Worlds and the Olympics.
