BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) - The West Indies Cricket Board has been advised to change its name in an effort to remodel its image and become compliant with the modern era of sporting management and administration.
The recommendation is part of the Governance Report - also called the Patterson Report - which was commissioned by the WICB and prepared by PJ Patterson, the former Jamaica Prime Minister, along with Sir Alister McIntyre and Dr Ian McDonald.
The document was delivered to the board's directors at their general meeting in Barbados on Saturday.
"The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) should be re-named 'Cricket West Indies', partly to give the organisation a new image and also to indicate explicitly that it will no longer be business as usual," the report urged.
"Cricket West Indies will consist of a Cricket West Indies Council and a Cricket West Indies Board."
The WICB was previously called the West Indies Cricket Board of Control, but the "control" was dropped when Pat Rousseau took over as president in 1998, in an effort to reach out to various stakeholders at all levels.
In its 138 pages, the report looked at all the major areas affecting West Indies cricket including the present crisis affecting the game's players and leadership; taking team performance to a higher level; role functions and contributions of territorial boards; the West Indies Cricket Academy; the need for a link with former players; and the emergence of Twenty20 cricket.
Several persons from across the region were asked to make recommendations and their views are also noted in the report.
On the topic of re-naming and re-branding the board, the Governance Report noted that the Council would be the larger of the two bodies established under Cricket West Indies.
