SPRINTER Patrick Jarrett, selected to Jamaica's athletic team for the World Championships in Canda next month, tested positive for the anabolic steroid, Stanozolol, at the National Championships in June.

Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) president, Patrick Anderson, confirmed the positive test and told the Sunday Observer Jarrett's sample -- along with 24 others taken from athletes at the Championships by local medical personnel -- was analysed by an International Olympic Committee/International Amateur Athletic Federation-accredited laboratory in Montreal, Canada.

"His was the only one that tested positive," said Anderson.

Jarrett, 23, became the first athlete to be tested positive for an illegal substance after a meet in Jamaica.

"The athlete now has the right to request that the "B" sample (second) be tested as well, and this should be done shortly," Anderson said.

Added Anderson: "We have done the decent thing which is to inform him. We have also informed the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), and the athlete has been summoned to a Tribunal hearing by the JAAA, which should take place either this Monday or Tuesday.

"He has denied knowledge of the substance and how it got into his system but it is mandatory that we ask him to attend the hearing so that the issue can be properly ventilated. If he is not able to convince the tribunal otherwise, then he would face a mandatory two-year ban."

Another member of the JAAA hierarchy told the Sunday Observer that while the test result was unwelcome it would legitimise the testing process done at meets in Jamaica.

"It tells the world that we are thorough with our testing here and says that by and large, our athletes are clean," the source said.

The muscular Jarrett, who posted a modest personal record of 10.14 seconds in the 100 metres last year, sprung to prominence earlier this year with fast times and a victory over world 100m record holder, Maurice Greene.

He ran a wind-aided 9.89 seconds (+3.7m/s) to thrash Greene at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on May 27.

Training partner, Tim Montgomery, was second in 9.92 with Greene posting the same time for third. At that time Jarrett was riding the crest of a wave that saw him winning at least four races starting with a win at the Penn Relays at the end of April.

With these performances under his belt, the flamboyant character entered the National Championships a howling favourite, but finished a close second to Christopher Williams, who won in 10.07. Jarrett posted 10.08. He was, however, assured of a place on the team for the World Championships in the Canadian city of Edmonton, Alberta.

Jarrett, who won the 100 metres at the National Championships in 1999, represented Jamaica at the World Championships that year as well as the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Jarrett is coached by Jamaican, Trevor Graham, who is also the coach of top female sprinter, Marion Jones, and 2001 fastest sprinter, Montgomery, who ran 9.84 at the Bislett Games Golden League meeting in Olso, Norway, last Friday.

Stanozolol came to prominence in 1988 as the steroid used by sprinter, Ben Johnson. It is used to build muscle and to help the user to recover faster from training.
