SIMOES: Goalkeepers, he explained, were exceptions as they usually last longer than outfield players. He also defended his decision to select two foreign-based goalkeepers—West Ham’s Shaka Hislop and Crewe Alexandra’s Clayton Ince—for the upcoming qualifier. “Sometimes when you select them,” said Simoes, “one or the other has a problem so it is better to have an option.” The Brazil-born former Jamaica coach expressed the view that Joe Public custodian Michael McComie and the other local goalkeepers have been improving. They were not yet, however, at the level of their foreign counterparts. He suggested that there may also be a call-up for Jamaica-born Public custodian Donovan Thomas. Thomas has in the past trained with both the Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica national teams with limited success. However, Simoes said that he was unaware that Thomas was available to play for the “Soca Warriors” and promised to look into it. Donavan Thomas is in a similar position to Shaka Hislop (born-UK/grew up in T&T)), born in Jamaica but grew up in T&T. He even played for Malick (Trinindad) in the SSFL some years ago along with Dwarika. So he's eligible to play for either T&T or JA. He's trained with both squads at different times, but never represented either country. Personal note: Thomas is a little inconsistant at times.
