The Newsletter will feature one alumni association each month and will continue to advertise the associations’ activities and other activities in the Diaspora. This month the newsletter highlights the activities of Queen’s High School Alumni Association. For those of us that have had some contact with members of Queen’s High School Alumni Association in South Florida, we must agree that the members are very energetic and supportive not only of their high school but also the community of South Florida. The Jamaica Diaspora is especially grateful for the financial contribution made by Queen’s High School Alumni association towards the refurbishing of the primary schools in Jamaica. Well done QHSA!!! Continue to flourish in wisdom and virtue!!! Rupert Rhodd SPOTLIGHT ON QUEEN’S HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (FLORIDA CHAPTER) The Queen’s High School Alumni Association (Florida Chapter) Inc. is a non-profit organization in accordance with the IRS Code 501C(3). The association was officially formed in 2000 and incorporated under the laws of the State of Florida in 2001. The mission of Queen’s High School Alumni Association is to assist in educating students that are presently attending Queen’s High School in Jamaica. This is done through mentoring, financial assistance, and the provision of learning materials such as stationery and books. The association also assists with the upkeep of the school’s infrastructure and other short term projects that benefit the entire school community. The Florida Chapter of Queen’s Alumni Association has provided financial assistance to families of current students that have passed away unexpectedly, and has also contributed financially to local South Florida charities such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Broward County Partnership for the Homeless, Diaspora of South Florida, victims of Hurricane Katrina and Broward Meals on Wheels to name just a few. Members of the association also volunteer their time to some of these organizations. The current officers of the Florida Chapter are Natalie Chung (President), Carleen Steadman (Secretary), and Maxine Drake-Brown (Treasurer). The Alumni thanks everyone for their support over the years and looks forward to your continued support especially for the upcoming fundraisers. These include a Fish Fry and Games Night on Saturday, May 6, 2006, at the Merrill United Methodist Church in Lauderdale Lakes, and a joint fund raising “Night to Remember” dance with the Calabar Old Boys Association on June 3, 2006, at the Greater Hollywood Jaycees Association in Hollywood.
