Jamaica Football Federation will share profit with parish associations
published: Sunday | January 22, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

PRESIDENT OF the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Crenston Boxhill, has promised to share any profit gained by his organisation with the parish associations.

Boxhill revealed his plans while addressing delegates at last week's annual general congress held at Munro College.

"I wish to announce that from 2006 onward, 25 per cent of the surplus gained by the federation will be shared equally between the parish football associations," said Boxhill.

Half of that amount will be channelled to assist their youth programme and the other half to administration.

As part of Boxhill's ongoing emphasis on youth development, he will be pledging at least $200,000 annually to the parish associations.

FINANCIAL STABILITY

"Because of the stability of our financial situation, we can now publicly commit to provide at least $200,000 annually to all parish associations to help with the development of the under 13 football at the parish level," said Boxhill.

"I am certainly pleased to have presided over an administration that can show a profit for the first time in three years, and in a period when the demands have been tremendous," he noted.

Reports out of the JFF have shown that the organisation has moved from a $8 million loss in 2004 to a $7.5 million unaudited profit in 2005.

TIGHT EXPENSE MANAGEMENT

"This was achieved by a tight expense management in particular and a great deal of sacrifice, " said Boxhill.

According to Boxhill, this trend shall not be reversed.

Boxhill, who survived a no-confidence vote at the congress, in which most of the delegates voted against his administration, 53-51, says no one is clearer on the financial stresses of the parish association and confederations.

"However, our desire to assist was only limited by our financial constraints. This administration will not be partial or discriminatory in any assistance we provide," Boxhill said.

The president also expressed his dissatisfaction with the public squabbling that preceded the congress, viewing it as negative towards garnering sponsorship.

Said Boxhill: "This type of support to this administration can only be negatively affected by the type of public bickering".

But he was quick to point out that everyone has a right to differ on issues, but it must be done in a decent manner.

"All have their democratic right to express views and concerns. I only urge us all to conduct this right in a way that does not damage the federation and its ability to access continued support," Boxhill added.

According to Boxhill, prior to the congress, he met with a potential sponsor who is ready to come on board for five years, but when asked of their opinion of the JFF, "the public bickering was their only concern".

"I have taken a firm stance that in the interest of the sport I was not going to respond to many of the attacks, many which seemed to be almost personal".

"That decision may have affected my popularity, but I am sure it has secured some sponsorship. I stand by the decision and will go that route again if necessary. I am not going to subject this sport and this federation to a public brawl".

"That will not be my legacy and others are now turning it into a favourite pastime,"
