Herbert Morrison's daCosta Cup midfielder Mario Samuels, (right) in action against Irwin High. - paul reid

IF FANS OF schoolboy football in general and those of Herbert Morrison Technical specifically are looking for reasons to be hopeful in the current season, they need to look no further than central midfielder Mario Samuels.

The 18-year-old, despite his dimunitive stature, stood head and shoulders above everyone else on the opening day's encounter of the schoolboy football season in the derby game between traditional rivals Cornwall College and Herbert Morrison. So brilliant was his performance that he emerged a hero for supporters of his team despite the doom and gloom that followed their 1-2 loss to Cornwall College.

In subsequent games he controlled the midfield in a manner similar to Hector Wright and Keith Tomlinson before him. He is not satisfied with just playing well, though, he wants to do more. Like most of the school's players and supporters he wants to take Herbert Morrison to the inter-zone round.

"It has been a long time that our school has not been out of the zone so I would love to help my school to get to that stage and then take it from there. On another level I would love to help my school defeat Cornwall College because we have not done that in a while," said the Hopewell, Hanover resident who grew up in a family of footballers and who first represented Lookout in the Hanover Division One.

"On a personal level I want to score about 18 goals and be selected for the All daCosta side," he added.

Little magician

The midfield maestro, who looks like a combination of the Trinidadian little magician Russell Latapy because of his size, vision, and ball artistry and Dutch midfieleder Edgar Davids because of his tireless running and tenacity in the tackle, has visions of making a good living from the sport he loves.

"Football is my life so I spend most of my time doing it. I am good at it so I try my best to enjoy it and make myself better at it.

"I want to be as big as Ronaldo is or Beckham one of the world's top footballers. I want to reach the level where I would be considered for FIFA Player of the Year. I would also love to play for my country. I have not played for any of the teams yet but I am looking forward to that day," said the player who grew up admiring Pele and Maradona internationally as well as local hero Theodore Whitmore.

If Samuels continues in this vein it will be only a matter of time before he gets his wish. Samuels is being backed by none other than his club coach, Paul 'Tegat' Davis, who gushes when he speaks about his ability. So impressed is Davis that he plans to draft him into the Seba senior squad as soon as the schoolboy season is over.

"Mario is a gifted player and I definitely have plans for him. I believe that it would be good to get him in the national set-up to start grooming him from early. He has all the tools and added to that he is a very intelligent player," the former national striker said.

Unaware of his club coach's endorsement, Samuels had set himself a target to get into the Seba senior squad this season and to become a regular next season.

"If I do not break into the Seba first team this season, then next season definitely. I am confident that I can do it, because I have the ability and I am not afraid to play against anybody," he said.

With his skills, mental approach and work ethic it is only a matter of time before he becomes a household name.
