BOXHILL ... this development marks the first time that any administration has placed so much emphasis on youth development and has taken it to the extent where it wants to develop specialist youth coaches
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), in keeping with its emphasis on youth development, is hosting a three-day coaching seminar at the secretariat as part of that programme.

Over fifty coaches were selected to participate in the sessions, but over 100 coaches and officials turned up on the first day yesterday to listen presenter, Vince Ganzberg - the director of coaching at Indianopolis Soccer and co-ordinator of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

According to Vin Blain, Coaches Co-ordinator at the JFF, this group (of coaches) is expected to take youth football education to the next level.

"This is a well-needed thrust for youth coaching, football can only benefit from this. But this morning alone showed us that when one is coaching children, there has to be a totally different approach," he noted.

Meanwhile, Ganzberg noted that the experience has been great and the coaches have been very receptive to his methods. He said coaching children is a delicate procedure, and it takes more than just football knowlegde to coach them effectively.

Yesterday, the coaches were introduced to the philosophy of youth coaching, organising and observing training sessions, prevention and care of injuries and coaching parents.

Today's session will be based on organising 9-12 year-olds, observing their sessions, dribbling, passing, controlling, heading and finishing techniques.

After lunch, attention will be paid to the concepts of attack and defence.

The seminar ends tomorrow with teaching sessions for both 5-8 and 9-12 year-old groups.

Coaching seminar an important milestone - Boxhill

President of the JFF Crenston Boxhill, who attended the seminar, made a speech at the opening session of the three-day event, and here is the full text of that address.

Today marks an important milestone in Football in this country and specifically, for this administration. We are extremely pleased to announce the historic start of the first coaching courses sponsored by the Federation that is earmarked to certify individuals charged with the responsibility of honing the skills of our youngsters throughout the length and breath of this country.

I say historic because we have always had coaching courses. But this development marks the first time that any administration has placed so much emphasis on youth development and has taken it to the extent where it wants to develop specialist youth coaches for use throughout the entire structures of the sport in Jamaica.

The realization of this has not been sudden. It was clear in our Manifesto, and we have to repeat these things because people forget them and their context in terms of history. We declared in March that this undertaking would be key among our priorities this year and we have delivered in August as we promised.

The response has been great. Initially, we targeted fifty coaches. Then we made allowance for another 25. The overall figure from the pre-registration exercise is showing closer to the 100 man mark. We have coaches here from the Premier League, clubs at other levels, schools (Government and private), as well as Parish and Confed programmes. We have basically covered all the necessary filtration areas.

The course is being conducted under the auspices of the NSCAA - the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Coaching Academy. It's a diploma course from which a National Coaching License can be obtained.
You may ask, 'Why from the USA' and not maybe from Holland, or Brazil or England?

The answer is two-fold: Over the last 10 years, the USA has qualified for every age group team in the FIFA World Cups and has matched that success with the continuing rise of their Senior team.

The second aspect springs from their proximity to us, and the utmost advantage for us to learn from them and to tap in their vast resources.

Plus, if you take a look at the NSCA itself, it is pretty established, well organised, and has a worthy track record of producing coaching materials consistent with the most innovative and successful methods. It's an organisation that has been around since 1941. And from information you can read in the general introduction to the module for this seminar, the NSCAA has a current membership of over 15,000, which makes it 'the largest single-sport coaching association in the world'.

The nature and purpose of the association is to educate, provide services and promote and stimulate interest in the game of soccer.

For our purposes, we want to go further. Our accent is on development within course, a context of creating and sustaining a transition scheme for the tiers of National teams and the various FIFA age-group World Cups. I say to the coaches: 'You have to see yourself in that vein - as architects in that process'.

The course you will embark on is the National Youth Diploma Course. It is designed for the more experienced youth coach working with players in the 5-12 age group. This is a very delicate category and where we need people so well-endowed in terms of training and the understanding of this period of a child's development.

In terms of football, if we were to inculcate the natural and necessary techniques properly, though understandably gradually, at this level, then we would not have to spend so much time correcting it at the higher levels.

The course content involves a component for the coach and parents, and it is something that I would want to spend some time and elaborate on.

Critical to coaching success at this level of engagement is parental support, and appreciation. The Americans have been masters of understanding this* and it has been a phenomenon of their success with their youth programmes. Look at their 'Soccer Moms' programme. The economic spin-offs for their programmes have been great.

But I believe the coaches' role is most paramount as a vehicle to get the parents, positively involved.

Here are a few points to consider:

A 'The child acts as your messenger to his parents' : what you say, how you said it, goes right back.

B 'Parents can be overbearing, but be patient and methodical in explaining the programme.'

C 'The Federation is relying on you to be its ambassadors'.
I appeal to coaches to apply themselves to the dictates of the module and presenters.

Having registered for this course, this module is given to you, but it does not become your 'PRO-PER-TY'. There are copyrights to it, which are owned by the NSCAA.

If you are keen on news, you may have heard that the US authorities are pretty serious on ensuring that copyrights originating there are not pirated. You therefore can not reproduce this material whether in part or whole, WITHOUT the expressed written consent of the NSCAA.
I hope we can be clear on this.

Welcome again to all. I implore you to make this course an important part of your development.
I thank you.
