19.03.03 - Jamaica's Arnett Gardens put up a fierce defense, but CD Necaxa of Mexico finally got the one goal they needed to advance by the minimum difference to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in Kingston two weeks ago, and on Wednesday at Estadio Olimpico in Aguascalientes, it took the home side three-quarters of the match to break down the Arnett Gardens rearguard.
But Adelino Batista finally found the back of the net for the Mexican club on 67 minutes, in a match that more and more seemed headed for extra time, then possible penalties, in case of another draw.
Batista, a center forward who was one of a number of players from the Necaxa youth scheme brought into the side for the Champions Cup match, received a pass from the flanks from Miguel Larrosa and after bringing down the ball with his chest drove it home past goalkeeper Julian McLeish.
The Mexican side dominated the majority of the match but were fortunate to maintain the result at the death with the visitors twice went close to equalizing through forward Cornel Chin-Sue.
Necaxa, winner of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1999, will now face the winner of the series between CD Motagua (Honduras) and Los Angeles Galaxy of the USA in the quarterfinal round, with matches set to be played 9 and 16 April.

Alexi Lalas scored on a header in the 72nd minute to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 1-0 victory over CD Motagua of Honduras in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Sunday night.
Lalas took a cross from Cobi Jones from 5 yards out and headed it to the nearside. The play was started by Mauricio Cienfuegos on a short corner kick to Jones. Cienfuegos, who announced the upcoming Major League Soccer season will be his final professional season, substituted for Alex Pineda Chacon in the 63rd minute.
The Galaxy defense held Motagua to just two shots on goal, with Kevin Hartman making saves on both. The teams tied, 2-2, in the first leg of the series on March 16 in Honduras.
The victory clinched the home-and-home total point series and advanced the Galaxy to the quarterfinals where it was to meet CD Necaxa of Mexico in a home-and-home series: April 9 at Cal State Fullerton and April 16 in Mexico.
