Socceroos get okay for London base

The English Football Association have given the go-ahead for Australia to establish a base in London.

And the Socceroos will play their first 'home' game on English soil on August 12 against Nigeria - with QPR's Loftus Road ground the favourite to stage the fixture.

Soccer Australia chairman Remo Nogarotto confirmed today that the FA have given the green light for the project and added that a number of 'home' venues were still being explored, but both Watford and QPR have approached them to host games.

'The English FA has given us the all-clear,' Nogarotto told the Sun Herald.

'They see no impediment to Australia playing home matches in London and have simply asked us to make the formal request in writing.'

Soccer Australia has set a target of six Socceroos games a year, four of which will be in Europe.

Nogarotto and Soccer Australia chief executive Stefan Kamasz held talks with several London clubs interested in becoming the Socceroos' home but nothing could be done until the FA granted permission.

Nogarotto also confirmed that Arsenal were 'not that interested' in the venture.

'I would prefer the Socceroos brand to be linked with a Premier League club,' he said.

'Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham are very interested, but we haven't got down to a proposal on the economics.'
