Well you are right a formation does allow the team and coach to plan and execute.
Since you have read my mind so well...then I hope you will agree that my saying "formation is not important" is an attempt to 'ram home' the idea of responsibility of players to perform in a manner such that the 'control' of the game (by the player's TEAM) as its dymanics demand must always be at the forefront of MIND. Therefore understanding that the player should not enter into a 'straight jacket of formation' to the detriment of TEAM needs and the ultimate aim - WINNING! |

I noticed you have skillfully evaded my point. Again I ask, show me a team, which is successful on the international or club scene that does not subscribe to formation?
Having a formation does not mean that it is something which will be held rigidly irrespective of the flow of the game. But formation gives teams the ability to have some semblance of organization, be it in attack or defense.
Having no system as I said is tantamount to chaos. The coach would then not know how to direct his charges in taking advantage of the strength or weakness of his opponent.
I know you are going to say it is players who win or lose a game. That may be true, but a good coach can make the difference between a winning team and a losing team too.

Even with your non formation play, you at some point are employing some formation. You will have so many people in defense, so many in midfield and some srtikers. However many people you chose to use in those sections of play will determine your formation.
Many coaches allow flexibility in the movement of players depending of the flow of the game. Even those coaches are subscribing to formation.
Can you imagine you have a team and your utility man Onandi Lowe does not know where he is playing, because you think formations means nothing? Utter choas!

Formations do have their place in football as in any other team-sport with so many players. Formation lends itself to a systems approach to achieving a goal. If you try to achieve the goal without a system in place, then you are mere gambling and hoping that your players can organize themselves both in attack and defense to win the game.
Name me a world conquering team or successful club team that does not embrace some formation or the other?

Nice use of words! ...but, I remain in my own world where formations mean nothing.
It is all about intelligent action(s) and intelligent re-action(s) by the player/players within the framework of winning ball, using it to best advantage for the expressed aim of WINNING.
Formations are NOT IMPORTANT. The important thing is dictating action on the field to one's own ends and one's TEAM's own ends. |
