8 UK-based Boyz for US friendly

Sunday, February 09, 2003

Jamaica's technical director, Carl Brown, yesterday called up eight UK-based players among a group of 22 for Wednesday's friendly international against the United States.

The game, scheduled for 7:00 pm, marks the first on the newly resurfaced pitch at the National Stadium.
Numbered among the eight are midfielders, Micah Hyde of Watford; Ricardo Gardner and Jermaine Johnson of Bolton Wanderers and Damien Francis of Wimbledon, along with strikers, Kevin Lisbie of Charlton; Onandi Lowe of Rushden & Diamonds; Deon Burton of Portsmouth and Trevor Benjamin of Leicester City.

Three of these players - Lisbie, Francis and Benjamin - have never played in Jamaica before. In fact, Lisbie, who scored the winner in Chalton's 2-1 victory over Everton at The Valley yesterday, has had only a couple of outings.

Benjamin has appeared only once - against Nigeria in Lagos, and Francis is yet to make his debut.
The UK-based players, excepting Lowe, who is already in the island, are expected here today when they join the rest of the squad at the Players' Residence at 102 Shortwood Road.

A release from the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) yesterday noted that the squad will be reduced to 18 following Tuesday evening's final training session.
The Americans, who were beaten 1-0 by two-time World Cup champions, Argentina yesterday, are expected in the island tomorrow.

Jamaica Squad: Goalkeepers - Aaron Lawrence and Donovan Ricketts; Defenders - Tyrone Marshall, Linval Dixon, Ian Goodison, Claude Davis, Robert Scarlett, Craig Ziadie, Shane Crawford and Fabian Dawkins; Midfielders - Hyde, Gardner, Johnson, Andrew Williams, Theodore Whitmore, Omar Daley and Francis; Strikers - Lisbie, Lowe, Burton, Benjamin and Fabian Taylor.
