TECHNICAL DIRECTOR designate Carl Brown hopes his youthful home-grown Reggae Boyz can build a winning pattern when they tackle St. Lucia's national football team in the eastern Caribbean isle tomorrow evening at 7:00 (6:00 local time).
"We're looking to continue to get the team exposed for them to understand fully what international football is all about," Brown told STAR Sports as the team went through their final routine on local soil yesterday evening.
"We need to develop a habit of learning not to lose games."
Since his new appointment, Jamaica won their first international game last week in Grenada, when Fabian Taylor netted the game-winner in a one-goal contest against the east Caribbean nation.
"It's a good set of games that we're getting," said Brown, pointing to tomorrow's contest. "We're playing against Caribbean teams which basically play similar to us...teams which are not really very tough and I believe this is where the team should start."
"I'm hoping they can get a good result from it which should build their confidence, develop a winning habit," Brown asserted. "Developing the habit to get out there and do the things we do in practice, that is what we want and hope to achieve in this game."
A former national player, who also coached the nation to two regional titles, Brown said the team did not run well without the ball last week and that is the main aspect of their play which they are trying to improve.
"Our movement was not good, particularly in the second half we didn't move a lot. We did that in the first half, we came up with two or three easy chaces that we should've put away. In the second half we didn't do it and this is something we need to develop consistency in doing, ensure that we do the good things of the game throughout a 90-minute game."
Low self-belief
Brown listed low self-belief as reason for their inconsistency.
"I think it's lack of confidence and that comes with playing more games. The president (Captain Horace Burrell) has promised that he'll get games for us.
"Look at the '98 campaign, we played close to 50 games per year, that will only bring the sort of confidence that you want to see your players step out with onto a football field. That will bring the level of confidence to play the Mexicos and the Costa Ricas and the Honduras'.
"That sort of confidence only comes with playing as often as possible and particularly, playing away games," added Brown.
An 18-man squad will travel this morning for the game, three of whom are touring for the first time with the senior Boyz - Cornwall College's Dane Richards, the only schoolboy rep from last season, Tivoli Gardens striker Roland Dean and Harbour View's full back Christopher Johnson.
Reno's goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence, the only player with over five years experience in the squad, will again captain the team.
Fabian Davis, the recent skipper and tough central defender, Marco McDonald, will not make the trip.
"Davis is out for disciplinary reasons, Marco McDonald has been excused because he has some personal reason," Brown said.
Asked to specify Davis' disciplinary breach, Brown declined, saying: "No, I won't elaborate on it."
The squad: Aaron Lawrence, Donovan Ricketts, Claude Davis, Alden Dunn, Sheldon Battiste, Irvino English, Fabian Dawkins, Christopher Johnson, Jonathan Williams, Damian Williams, Fabian Taylor, Kevin Wilson, Roe Nelson, Kirk Hendricks, Dane Richards, Roland Dean, Richard Henry and Omar Daley.
