Another dismal display could affect Ja - Burrell
By Nodley Wright, Staff Reporter
ANOTHER DISMAL display by the Reggae Boyz similar to that put on against the United States earlier this month and quality opposition could be difficult to come by, Jamaica Football Federation president Captain Horace Burrell said from South Korea yesterday.
The Boyz were beaten 5-0 by the US in New Jersey in that country's penultimate World Cup warm-up game and Burrell, who is seeking more games, said one more such result could do great damage.
"That result has unfortunately affected us," said Burrell who is on the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. "I am not going into the technical aspects of that game but what I did not see then was the effort and we cannot tolerate that.
"It will take a little time but I am confident that we will be able to put it behind us as a one-off, unfortunate situation. It is therefore imperative that our players and coaching staff realise how very important it is for us to perform well at all times because failure to so will result in the big countries not wanting to play us," he said.
Failure to get good opposition could disrupt the entire plan that Capt. Burrell said he intends to put in place for the national programme which will be geared towards the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The journey to that World Cup would
follow a similar path to the 1998 campaign, he said.
"It is very important to note that we will be returning to the format that we used under the tenure of Rene Simoes where we had a number of international games overseas and at home in preparing for the World Cup," said Burrell.
"I have advised technical director designate Carl Brown that we are going to start the initiative. I have also instructed him to put together a local squad which will train on a permanent basis as we did in 1998 campaign. They will be given a weekly allowance by the federation and will not be allowed to work other than to train," he continued.
Already Burrell, who along with JFF general secretary Horace Reid attended the FIFA Congress at which Sepp Blatter was returned as president, has begun the process of seeking friendly games.
"Reid and I are here looking at a number of dates on the calendar plus our own dates of availability in Jamaica. We have that calendar here and we are seeking dates with some of the big nations but we are hoping that the National Stadium will be back to readiness shortly after the staging of the World Junior Games in July," Burrell said.
Among the countries that have already been approached are Germany, England, Ireland, Nigeria, South Africa, Iceland, the US, Mexico and Costa Rica.
"I believe that if all the various entities work closely together, our qualification for the 2006 World Cup will become a reality without much difficulty," he said.

Posted - May 30 2002 : 10:26:58 AM If Burrell is committed to this course of action ...things could be looking up for the Reggae Boyz!
He should have allowed the TD to be making an input on the Program. As stated one could not be blamed for thinking the Captain has decided the Simoes way is the way to go...then, imformed te TD.
Further, it certainly could be assumed that the Captain and general Secretary Reid are lining up opponents without regards to the TD's aim of e.g. which opponent to play were when considering relative strengths and the TD's ideas and concept of how to 'bring on' TEAM Reggae Boyz.
Is the Captain and General Secretary Reid co-TDs ...and Carl the fall guy if things go wrong?
I can just see us winning a match and the Captain proclaiming - "My strategy of using 4 at the back....blab! blab!
